The piano is one of the musical instruments we use during Christian praise and worship services. Whether it is acoustic or electronic, be it an expensive grand piano or the cheap old one that needs some tuning, once a harmony is created from artistically and skillfully playing those black and white keys, the church atmosphere changes into a worshipful place.
A person who plays the piano/keyboard is called the pianist/keyboardist. A pianist who plays piano at church is a church pianist. The church pianist (or musician) works together with the pastor or worship leader to lead the congregation into experiencing a meaningful worship. Without music, worship is dull. Therefore, piano music (or any other musical instruments) is a must during praise and worship services to help set the heart and mood of every worshiper.
Almost all churches have piano or electronic keyboard. However, very few can play it. This is the dilemma of most churches today: the lack of church pianists. Why is there a shortage of church pianists worldwide?
With the internet technology today, learning how to play piano is no longer impossible. There are websites that offer free piano lessons, and there are websites that sell piano courses. You can learn anytime anywhere. The only problem you would have is the piano or keyboard. If you do not have one, try borrowing from a friend who has a piano/keyboard, try using your church’s piano, or perhaps you could start saving money and buy a cheap secondhand piano or electronic keyboard in the future. Do not forget to pray and ask God; He grants wishes most of the time, especially if it is to serve Him and minister to others.

- Not everyone can afford to go to a piano school or hire a piano tutor.
- There are no piano teachers or piano schools in your area.
- It takes some time to learn and master piano playing.
- Nobody would like to commit to this ministry.
- Piano or keyboard is expensive.

What do you need in order to become a good church pianist?
- You will need lots of patience and practice. It takes some time to master the skill. Do not feel frustrated if you think you are slowly learning. Many pianists go through this struggle.
- You will also need music theory and knowledge. Research music theories and read lots of music/piano books. Watch and listen to other pianists; observe how they play.
- Most importantly, you will need God’s anointing. God’s anointing will let you play beyond your skill level during times of true worship even if you know only a few chords, a few songs, or lacks the ability to sight read.
