THE PIANO
The word "piano" is a shortened term of the Italian "pianoforte," which is the original name of the instrument. The piano is a musical instrument played by pressing the keys with fingers of both hands. It is a string instrument because it is basically made up of strings that when struck produces sound.
HISTORY OF PIANO
The pianoforte, or piano for short, evolved from the harpsichord and clavichord during the 1700s. The man who invented it was an Italian named Bartolomeo Cristofori, a keeper of instruments working in the court of Prince Ferdinand de Medici of Florence, Italy.
There was a problem with the harpsichord and clavichord during the 1700s when the piano was not yet built. While the harpsichord produced loud sounds, the clavichord was too soft especially for large performance. Cristofori solved this problem when he was able to build the piano.
TYPES OF PIANO
PARTS OF PIANO
Keyboard
The keyboard produces sound when you press each key. It has black and white keys.
Keys, Hammer, and Strings
The keys are embedded on the keyboard. We have 88 keys composed of black and white keys. When you press a key, the hammer strikes a string to produce sound.
Pedals
We step on the pedals to soften the sound or make the sound longer.
Case and Lid
The case houses the parts of the piano. The lid covers the strings and hammers. When the lid is opened, the sound is louder. When the lid is closed, the sound is a bit softer.
